What is Hypnotherapy?
While traditional therapies deal with symptoms on a cognitive or intellectual level (dealing with the conscious mind), hypnotherapy bypasses the critical factor of the ‘conscious analyzing’ mind and goes right to the subconscious – which is the seat of the emotions as well as the storehouse of memories. The term ‘hypnotherapy’ has two component parts – ‘hypnosis’ and ‘therapy. Hypnosis is not a treatment in itself, but an efficient way to access the subconscious part of the mind which controls our deeper thoughts and actions. Therapy refers to a form of treatment that can deal with a wide variety of issues to include unwanted behaviors, habits or addictions, treating them through verbal communication, positive language and suggestion.
The concept of ‘hypnotic trance’
A ‘hypnotic trance’ is a trance induced by the use of hypnosis. Hypnosis is a relaxed mental state – known as a ‘trance’. ‘Trance’, which is a totally natural phenomenon, is very safe, extremely pleasant and very relaxing. It can be a wonderful experience. Some people experience mild tingling sensations, lightness or heaviness, some people feel as though they are floating; others simply enjoy the experience of deep relaxation.
We can all experience trance in day-to-day life. For example, when we are engrossed in an activity such as watching TV, reading a book or when we are driving. It is a very comfortable and relaxing day dream like state where we are deeply focused and able to ignore what is going on around us.
By the use of hypnosis the hypnotherapist deliberately induces this pleasant and relaxed state. While in trance there is increased susceptibility to suggestion, as the barriers between the conscious and subconscious mind are relaxed. The subconscious mind responds well to verbal stimuli, it merely accepts suggestion and acts upon it. Therefore the hypnotherapist can facilitate positive change whilst the client experiences a very pleasant and relaxing hypnotic trance.
The human mind is amazing – it can do amazing things!
The human mind consists of two parts, the ‘conscious’ and the ‘subconscious’. Most people are aware of the 20% that is the conscious mind but there is another 80% which is the subconscious mind that isn’t always used and which has an amazing amount of potential.
Can you imagine what we could achieve if we knew how to use the larger part of our mind?
The reason why hypnotherapy is so effective is because it is used to target the subconscious mind, which tends not to analyze or criticize. By using hypnotherapy we can alter the way we feel, shift limiting or outdated beliefs, dispel unhealthy emotions or negative thought patterns and eradicate bad habits and/or addictions. Hypnotherapy in its clinical use is quite simply the most powerful device for personal development and positive change.
Whatever the mind of man can conceive, it can achieve.’
